These questions can almost answer themselves if you give them enough thought. The definition of surveilance is a close observation of a person or group. Notice the word observation and take heed. Observing others through various audio and video surveilance techniques will rarely prevent theft, vandalism, and other crime from taking place. It actually is most beneficial when it comes time to seek and find the perpetrator or thief for retribution or prosecution.

When we think of surveilance we almost automatically think of surveilance cameras. These amazing devices are the poster-child for crime prevention or at the very least, prosecution. Audio surveilance in terms of tape recording, wiretapping, and eavesdropping are also popular forms of surveilance although most people immediately associate this practice with cameras. Other surveilance equipment may include both audio and video recorders, covert mounts and everyday objects used to disguise a camera. Also a broadcasting transmitter and a recieiver to initiate wireless communication falls into the realm of miscellaneous surveilance equipment.

In terms of home protection, those interested in home surveilance more often than not would combine a camera system with an alarm system. the camera system alone does little to prevent crime and illegal actions from taking place. It is very effective after the fact in court and criminal prosecution. The alarm system is protective equipment designed to keep your valuables or your home safe from entry in the first place. This is considered home security and not surveilance.

Personal property in your home, as well as the home itself are better protected through the use of alarms and of course a good set of locks for your doors and windows. A secure household will amount to a better deterrent than a camera any day of the week. A surveilance camera system in the home would be a great addition to an alarm system but it wouldn't be reciommended as a sole means of protection.

When the day is done, it will come down to financial investment. A good solid security system accompanied by surveilance cameras would be ideal protection for any residence. Depending on your neighborhood and your home's value the decision of how much security is enough rests with the homeowner.
